Independent Investigation

Investigators still have great difficulty accessing the site of a crashed Malaysian plane in eastern Ukraine on Saturday, taking 298 lives. The landing site is controlled by gangs of Russian mercenaries and local separatists in eastern Ukraine, which, despite growing calls from the international community for an immediate independent investigation, are preventing international observers from gaining unhindered access to the scene.

The fate of the “black boxes” of the crashed plane is also unknown, although there have been reports that at least one of them has been found.

AFP journalists report from the scene that the remains of many people are still scattered in the area.
